The Bomb med Emilie Nicolas

Onsdag 6. august markeres 80-årsdagen for atombombens ødeleggelser i Hiroshima. Datoen er også åpningen av Øyafestivalen 2025 i Tøyenparken.

I den anledning skal filmen The Bomb vises i Sirkus, mens helt nyskrevet musikk framføres live av 16 musikere. Dette blir en unik opptreden, og på Øya vil Emilie Nicolas være vokalist. Dette blir verdenspremiere på den nye utgaven av The Bomb.

Utgangspunktet for The Bomb er boka Command and Control (2013) av Eric Schlosser, som også er involvert i forestillingen. Den nye musikken er skrevet av Marius de Vries og Matt Robinson. førstnevnte har tidligere hatt musikalsk ansvar for flere suksessfulle filmer, som Moulin Rouge og La La Land. I tillegg har han samarbeidet med storheter som PJ Harvey, Björk, David Bowie, Rufus Wainwright og FKA twigs. The Bomb-opptredener har tidligere blitt gjennomført på store musikk- og filmfestivaler, samt under Nobel-fredsprissermonien i 2017. Den timelange filmen, med tilhørende musikk, minner oss på den stadige trusselen atomvåpen utgjør.

Eric Schlosser om bakgrunnen for The Bomb:

Concerned that the threat of nuclear weapons was growing, my friend Smriti Keshari and I created the bomb almost a decade ago. We wanted audiences to have a powerful, visceral experience that made them think, that provoked them, that warned them thousands of these murderous machines are still out there in silos and bunkers and submarines, just waiting to be used. With help from the artist Stanley Donwood, the director Kevin Ford, and the musicians who form The Acid, we made the bomb to wake people up. We are grateful to the Oya Festival for hosting the world premiere of this new version of the bomb and grateful to Marius de Vries, Matt Robinson, and Emilie Nicolas for all their work on it. The danger posed by nuclear weapons has never been greater, the need for action to get rid of them never more urgent. Eighty years ago, two Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, were destroyed by atomic bombs. Our response to that fact can be said in two words: Never again.

Øyafestivalen har jobbet med dette prosjektet siden i januar, og er veldig stolte over å kunne presentere resultatet under årets festival. At vi i tillegg fikk til et samarbeid med Emilie Nicolas er vi veldig fornøyde med. Emilie Nicolas er en av Norges fremste vokalister, og er flere ganger prisbelønnet for sin egen musikk.

Det er et stort ansvar og en stor ære å få fremføre The Bomb. Verket minner oss på hvor brutal verden kan være – og hvor viktig det er å aldri glemme. Å jobbe med Marius de Vries og Erik Schlosser i denne prosessen har vært inspirerende. Og nå som verden virkelig brenner, og det er vanskelig å finne mening, føles det ekstra viktig å stå på scenen med dette verket. Jeg gleder meg dypt til å dele dette med publikum, sier Emilie Nicolas.

Marius de Vries om musikken:

It was a great privilege to be approached by directors Eric Schlosser and Smriti Keshari to devise a live orchestral version of The Acid’s profound and inventive score to The Bomb. From the moment we first talked about it, I knew this was a project I wanted to collaborate on with my long-time friend and associate Matt Robertson, whose musical sensitivity and technical expertise would I was certain make him an indispensable partner.

Our aim was to stay true to the power and atmosphere of the original music, while expanding it to incorporate the full emotional depth and impact of a live orchestra. This evolution has allowed us to amplify the score’s dramatic force without diluting its original spirit.

The vocal elements of the score are crucial to its emotional and narrative charge. In discussions with the festival, we felt it was important to localize that element by involving a Norwegian vocal artist. We were fortunate to be introduced to Emilie Nicolas, whose unique voice and artistic instincts make her an ideal collaborator. She responded to the project with immediate enthusiasm, and the process of working together has already proved rich and rewarding.

We are collectively honored to commemorate this momentous anniversary on August 6th in Norway — a date that continues to echo with urgency, reflection, and hope.
